Yonkers, New York

Yonkers has the fourth largest population in the state of New York. Residents of the city are often referred to as Yonkersonians or Yonkersites. The citizens of this city are relatively composed of a variety of people coming from different racial and cultural backgrounds. Most of its citizens belong to the middle class and only a miniscule number of the people who live there are below the poverty line.

The land upon which the city is now built on was once part of a land grant given to one Adriaen van der Donck, who was then locally known as Jonkheer or Jonker, which means “young gentleman” or “esquire” – this is where the city derived its name of Yonkers. Other nicknames of the city include The Central City, The Land of Hudson, The Terrace City, The City of Hills, and The City of Vision.

That last nickname is proven by the fact that what was once the small farming community that is Yonkers is now a thriving New York city.
Public transportation is easy to come by in Yonkers as it is eighth in the United States when it comes to the rate of public transit ridership. Sporting four railroad stations, several bus systems and a ferry service, one is sure to find their way around the city even without a private vehicle.

In order to increase the city’s economic viability, the government has launched a vast revitalization project. Through this, Yonkers is hoping to increase the influx of tourists to the city. This is a great endeavor in that it opens up doorways for better tourism in the city and is also allowing Yonkers businesses a greater pool of customers to serve.

As already mentioned early on in this article, there are many attractions from which to choose from in the city of Yonkers. The Yonkers Raceway is a particular attraction as it sports the a harness racing track that has clubhouses with video slot machine gambling in the racino known as Empire City. This mixes two forms of gambling – one in the race track and one through slot machines.
